UC Opens Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBGYN) and Surgery Programs, Eastern Indonesia Gets a Breath of Fresh Air for Specialist Doctors.

PR SURABAYA – More than just an elite university, Ciputra University is stepping in to address the national shortage of specialists.
Ciputra University (UC) Surabaya has officially levelled up. The Faculty of Medicine (FK UC) has secured permits to open the Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBGYN) and Surgical Specialist Doctor Education Programs (PPDS).
This move is not just about academic prestige. It is also a concrete answer to the specialist doctor crisis that continues to plague Indonesia, especially in Eastern Indonesia.
The Dean of FK UC, Prof. Dr Dr. Hendy Hendarto, SpOG Subsp FER, emphasised that the opening of these two strategic programs carries a major mission: accelerating the equitable distribution of national health services.
According to him, the unequal distribution of specialist doctors remains a serious challenge for the country.
“For Obstetrics and Gynaecology, our focus is clear: increasing the number of specialist doctors in Eastern Indonesia. The need is very high, but the supply is not yet balanced,” Prof. Hendy emphasised.
Regional Bond Scholarships, Specialist Studies, Returning to Serve
Furthermore, the Faculty of Medicine at UC has established a special scholarship scheme for prospective specialist doctors from Eastern Indonesia.
This scholarship is accompanied by a moral and professional commitment. Graduates must return to serve in their home regions after completing their education.
This step is considered strategic. It could help break the chain of health service disparities concentrated on the island of Java.
FK UC wants to ensure that educational investments truly have a direct impact on the community.
“We want graduates not only to excel academically, but also to be present as real solutions in areas lacking specialist doctors,” Prof. Hendy continued.
Surgical Residents, Ready to Face the Era of Minimally Invasive Surgery
In addition to Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Faculty of Medicine at UC is designed to be futuristic and adaptable to developments in medical technology.
Students will be equipped with minimally invasive surgery skills. This modern surgical technique is now a global standard due to its greater effectiveness and faster recovery.
“Today’s surgeons must be technology-savvy. Minimally invasive surgery is not an option, but a necessity,” said Prof. Hendy.
Responding to Ministry of Health Data, Not Just a Phrase
Ministry of Health data indicates that Indonesia has a significant shortfall of specialist doctors, particularly outside Java, with many regions reporting numbers well below national averages.
The ratio of Obstetrician-Gynaecologists (OBGYNs) and Surgical Specialists is still below the WHO’s ideal standards, even though both are the backbone of national referral services.
The presence of PPDS (Regional Doctors) at Ciputra University is supported by the construction of a dedicated tower for the Faculty of Medicine. This confirms UC’s position as an impactful campus. The university not only produces degrees but also offers strategic solutions to national problems.
Amid a medical workforce crisis, UC’s move sends a strong signal. Higher education can and must contribute to saving Indonesia’s healthcare system.***
