Ciputra University Opens Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Surgery Specialist Programs
January 24, 2026
jatim.jpnn.com, SURABAYA – Ciputra University (UC) officially opened the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) for two strategic fields: Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Obgyn) and Surgery, as a step to strengthen the distribution of specialist doctors in Indonesia, particularly in Eastern Indonesia.
The Faculty of Medicine (FK UC) received approval to open the program on January 23, 2026.
Dean of FK UC, Prof. Dr Hendy Hendarto, SpOG Subsp FER, stated that the presence of these two specialist programs is part of UC’s commitment to meeting the high national demand for specialist doctors.
“For Obgyn specialists, we have a major mission to increase the number of specialist doctors in Eastern Indonesia. Currently, the need is still very high, while the distribution of doctors is uneven,” said Prof. Hendy.
As a concrete form of support for equitable healthcare services, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (UCI) is also offering a special scholarship program for prospective students from Eastern Indonesia.
This program is accompanied by a commitment to ensure graduates return to their home regions after completing their specialist education.
“We want graduates to not only excel academically, but also to truly impact communities in regions where specialist medical personnel are still lacking,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Surgical Specialist Education Program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (UCI), is designed to keep pace with the latest medical technology. Participants will be equipped with minimally invasive surgical skills, which are now standard in modern surgical practice.
“Surgical technology continues to advance. Specialist doctors must be able to master minimally invasive techniques for more effective services and faster patient recovery,” he said.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, Indonesia still experiences a shortage of specialist doctors, especially outside Java. The national specialist doctor ratio is also below the World Health Organisation (WHO) ideal standards, particularly for obstetrics and surgical services.
The establishment of the Specialist Education Program at Ciputra University is also supported by the construction of the UCI Faculty of Medicine tower as a modern educational facility.
“This is a manifestation of the impact campus has on providing strategic national solutions to improve the quality and equity of healthcare services in Indonesia,” concluded Prof. Hendy. (mcr12/jpnn)
