Ciputra University (UC) Surabaya supports efforts to increase and equitably distribute specialist doctors, particularly in Eastern Indonesia, through the Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Surgery Program.
Hendy Hendarto, Dean of the UC Faculty of Medicine (FK), stated that the UC Faculty of Medicine has obtained permission to open the two programs. He emphasised that the programs are not only designed to produce superior specialist doctors but also to strengthen the equity of national health services.
“For Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialists, our mission is to increase the number of specialist doctors in Eastern Indonesia. The need for specialist doctors is still very high, while their distribution is uneven,” he said on Saturday (January 24, 2026).
The PPDS Surgery program is designed to keep pace with the latest medical technology. Students will be equipped with minimally invasive surgery skills, which are now the standard for handling various modern surgical cases.
“Surgical technology continues to evolve. Therefore, in addition to basic surgical skills, doctors must also master minimally invasive techniques for more effective care and faster patient recovery,” he said.
As a commitment to equitable healthcare services, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (UCI) is also offering a scholarship program for prospective students from Eastern Indonesia.
Furthermore, the program is subject to specific requirements, including a commitment to return to their home regions after completing specialist education.
“We hope that graduates will not only excel academically but also be able to make a direct impact on communities in areas that still lack specialist medical personnel,” he said.
According to data from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), Indonesia still faces a shortage of specialist doctors, especially outside Java. The ratio of specialist doctors in Indonesia is still below WHO standards, particularly in obstetrics and surgery, which are the backbone of referral healthcare services.
He assured that the presence of PPDS (Regional Doctors) at UC, supported by the construction of a new educational facility, namely a dedicated tower for the Faculty of Medicine, will provide a strategic national solution to improve the quality and equity of healthcare services in Indonesia.
