To Develop Specialists for Eastern Indonesia, UC Opens PPDS Obgyn and Surgery Programs
January 23, 2026
KILASJATIM.COM, Surabaya – Ciputra University Surabaya, through its Faculty of Medicine (FK UC), has officially obtained permission to open a Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) in two strategic areas: Obstetrics and Gynecology (Obgyn) and Surgery. The introduction of these two programs represents a concrete step by the university to address the high demand for specialist doctors in Indonesia.
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Ciputra University, Prof. Dr Hendy Hendarto, SpOG Subsp FER, emphasised that this program is not only focused on the quality of graduates, but also on the equitable distribution of national healthcare services. “For the Obgyn (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) specialist program, our mission is to increase the number of specialist doctors in Eastern Indonesia. The need for specialist doctors remains very high, while their distribution is uneven,” he said.
As a manifestation of this commitment, FK UC has prepared a scholarship scheme for prospective students from Eastern Indonesia. Scholarship recipients will meet specific requirements, including a commitment to return to their home region after completing their education. “The hope is that graduates will not only excel academically but also be able to make a direct impact on communities in areas that still lack specialist medical personnel,” added Prof. Hendy.
In addition to Obgyn, the PPDS Surgery Program is also designed to keep pace with developments in modern medical technology. Students will be equipped with minimally invasive surgical competencies, which are now standard in many surgical procedures. “Surgical technology continues to evolve. Therefore, in addition to basic surgical skills, doctors must also master minimally invasive techniques for more effective care and faster patient recovery,” he explained.
Ministry of Health data indicate that Indonesia continues to face a shortage of specialist physicians, particularly outside Java. The ratio of specialist doctors across regions does not meet the need for referral services, particularly in obstetrics and surgery, which play a crucial role in managing maternal and child health cases and emergencies.
The opening of the Resident Doctor Program (PPDS) at Ciputra University is also supported by the construction of a new educational facility, a dedicated tower for the Faculty of Medicine. This step strengthens the readiness of educational facilities and emphasises the university’s role in providing strategic solutions to improve the quality and equity of national healthcare services.
