Shifting the Research Paradigm, Bridging the Academic-Industry Gap

February 28, 2025

PT Salam Pacific Indonesia Lines (SPIL) has officially established a strategic partnership with Ciputra University Surabaya through the launch of the SPIL Research Center (SRC).

This collaboration aims to transform academic research findings into concrete solutions to support industrial progress and economic development.

PT SPIL’s Director of Human Capital & Corporate Affairs, Ang Harry Tjahjono, emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry.

“Through the SRC, we want to change the research paradigm, which has traditionally been confined to academic journals. We are committed to implementing student and lecturer research findings into solutions applicable to real-world business needs,” said Ang Harry Tjahjono, Thursday (27/2).

He added that PT SPIL has a particular interest in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and improving operation management systems that can increase company efficiency.

“Our focus is on creating efficiency, which doesn’t mean reducing the workforce, but rather increasing human resource capacity and expanding job opportunities. This is what we expect from our collaboration with Ciputra University,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Ciputra University Surabaya Rector Yohannes Somawiharja stated that this collaboration demonstrates his institution’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only theoretically rich but also capable of providing real solutions to current industry needs.

“We don’t want to be an institution that simply produces research journals without practical impact. Through this collaboration with PT SPIL, we want to ensure that the academic knowledge produced can be directly applied and provide added value to the industrial sector,” he said.

Yohannes emphasized that this collaboration will provide a valuable opportunity for students to learn firsthand about real-world challenges in the logistics and shipping industry.

“Immediately after this inauguration, our team will conduct an assessment at PT SPIL to identify areas that can be the focus of joint research. We are confident that this collaboration will produce innovations that benefit both parties and the wider community,” he explained.

He also hopes that the establishment of the SPIL Research Center will become a model for industry-academia collaboration that can be replicated by other educational institutions and companies in Indonesia.

“This program also aligns with the government’s efforts to encourage triple helix collaboration between academia, industry, and the government to accelerate innovation and national economic growth,” he concluded. (H-2)
