Ciputra University VCD Students Translate the Emotions of Music into Visuals
June 12, 2026
Surabaya (beritajatim.com) – Second-semester students in the Visual Communication Design (VCD) program at Ciputra University (UC) in Surabaya have translated emotions and music into visual forms.
This innovation is showcased in an exhibition titled “Feel the Emotion: Of the Sound, Image, & Synesthesia” at Copreneur UC. Dozens of works on display are inspired by four original songs composed by the students.
UC VCD lecturer Pandu R. Utomo noted that this project stimulates a new perspective among students regarding the medium of design. Design works are now crafted to engage the senses—from hearing to touch.
“Design can reach other senses, interact with sound and human emotions, and process feelings. Students learn to translate experiences into meaningful visual communication,” said Pandu on Friday, June 12, 2026.
This immersive approach is considered highly relevant to current developments in the creative industry. Designers are expected to craft emotional connections that resonate with the realities of Generation Z, such as the search for identity and hope.
“Design works are no longer merely conveyors of messages, but rather a medium that sparks reflection and fosters deep emotional connections,” said Pandu.
Meanwhile, Exhibition Chair Benaya Christofer F. explained that the event’s concept draws inspiration from the phenomenon of synesthesia. This phenomenon links sensory stimuli—such as visualizing colors while hearing a note.
“In this exhibition, we translate music into a visual experience that can be seen and felt. Each piece has a different story and atmosphere based on the creator’s experience,” said Benaya.
All the visual works on display went through a long and structured process. The students first wrote lyrics and created musical arrangements as a foundation before turning them into posters, album covers, and illustrations.
