January 24, 2026

infoSurabaya |Surabaya- Ciputra University is taking a concrete step in addressing the high demand for specialist doctors in Indonesia, particularly in Eastern Indonesia, by opening a Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) for two strategic areas: Obstetrics and Gynecology and Surgery. This opening follows the official approval of the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) by the Faculty of Medicine (FK UC).

According to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Ciputra University, Prof. Dr. Hendy Hendarto, SpOG Subsp FER, both programs are designed not only to produce superior specialist doctors but also to strengthen the distribution of national healthcare services.

“For the Obgyn (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) specialist program, our mission is to increase the number of specialist doctors in Eastern Indonesia. The need for specialist doctors is still very high, while their distribution is uneven,” said Prof. Hendy.

As part of its commitment to equitable healthcare services, FKUC also offers a scholarship program for prospective students from Eastern Indonesia. This program is awarded subject to specific requirements, including a commitment to return to their home regions upon completing their specialist education.

“We hope that graduates will not only excel academically but also be able to make a direct impact on communities in areas where there is a shortage of specialist medical personnel,” he added.

In addition to the Obgyn program, FK UC also offers a Specialist Surgical Education Program designed to keep pace with the latest medical technology. Students will be equipped with minimally invasive surgery skills, which are now standard in the management of various modern surgical cases.

“Surgical technology continues to advance. Therefore, in addition to basic surgical skills, doctors must also master minimally invasive techniques to ensure more effective care and faster patient recovery,” explained Prof. Hendy.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, Indonesia continues to face a shortage of specialist physicians, particularly outside Java. The specialist-to-population ratio in Indonesia remains below WHO standards, particularly in obstetrics and surgery, which are the backbone of referral healthcare services.

The presence of the Specialist Doctor Education Program at Ciputra University, supported by the construction of a new educational facility, namely a dedicated tower for the Faculty of Medicine (FK) UC, contributes to a national strategic solution to improve the quality and equity of healthcare services in Indonesia.
