CURRENT WORK: Gabriella Gracelia and Feilia Muliadi create death-themed clothing designs

SURABAYA – Thirty avant-garde fashion designs by fifth-semester fashion design and business (FDB) students at Ciputra University (UC) were exhibited yesterday (January 22). The final project for the Specialised Fashion Design Project class carried the overarching theme of Beyond.

The Memento Mori group embraced the concept of death in their work. “The message is that rather than fearing death, it’s better to just enjoy it,” explained Fellia Muliadi, a member of Memento Mori.

In addition to a strong concept, Memento Mori also features majestic designs and bold colours. According to Fellia, the colours chosen are aligned with fashion trends, such as future dusk. “The colours are more in black, purple, grey, and silver tones,” she said.

The Hidden Realms group chose natural colours in their work. Hidden Realms group member Gabriella Gracielia explained, “We chose natural colours like green and brown. In the exhibition, they presented the concept of a small terrarium, a small world in a container. “Inside this small world, there’s something that many people don’t know about,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Specialised Fashion Design Project lecturer Enrico SSn MDS added that through the exhibition, he hopes his students will be able to create out-of-the-box work. “So that the designs can meet international designer standards. Especially since avant-garde fashion isn’t a very advanced technique,” he added. (ama/aph)
