Ciputra University Holds National Peranakan Batik Festival

KBRN, Surabaya: Ciputra University Surabaya is holding the 2025 Peranakan Festival to preserve national batik. The festival carries the theme “PERANAKAN: PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE.”

The Rector of Ciputra University Surabaya, Ir. Yohannes Somawiharja, M.Sc., on Saturday (March 1, 2025), called batik a masterpiece of the Indonesian nation. “Batik is a cultural heritage that we must preserve,” he said.

As part of the preservation effort, Ciputra University invited Oey Soe Tjoen, the owner of Peranakan batik, to share his knowledge about Indonesian batik. “We want to contribute to the Indonesian nation through batik preservation,” he said.

The festival not only showcases batik but also presents seminars inviting academics, artists, and cultural enthusiasts. Among them is Prof. Dr Johannes Widodo from the National University of Singapore. He discussed the origins of Chinese Peranakan culture and its influence on architecture.

Fendy Zein, S.Psi., also shared insights into the journey of the family business, Kue Ny. Yasin Zein. He described the development of traditional Indonesian cakes, rich in cultural significance.

Enrico, M.Ds., and Marini Yunita, M.Fashion, from Ciputra University, also provided an overview of Peranakan batik. They emphasised the importance of introducing batik to the younger generation.

The 2025 Peranakan Festival provides a space for the younger generation to learn about and preserve Indonesia’s cultural heritage. Peranakan batik, as part of the nation’s identity, is an important symbol of cultural diversity.
