Dipinggirnya terpancang lampu meja kecil. Nantinya, lampun tersebut dapat menyala tanpa sambungan kabel ke sumber listrik. Lumut \u2013 lumut di dalam pot itulah yang akan memasok energi dan menyalakan lampu meja tersebut. Moss Table, meja ini merupakan produk yang didemonstrasikan di Milan Furniture Fair 2014 April lalu untuk mengeksplorasi kemungkinan penggunaan teknologi biofotovoltaik (BPV) pada masa depan. Perangkat biofotovoltaik menghasilkan listrik dari energi yang bersumber pada proses fotosintesis oleh organisme seperti siano bakteria, lumut, atau ganggang. Ide dibalik pembuatan meja ini adalah energi yang dihasilkan pada siang hari dapat disimpan di dalam baterai. Malam harinya, energi tersebut digunakan untuk menyalakan lampu. Saat ini, energi yang dihasilkan lumut dalam Moss table memang belum cukup untuk membuat lampu terus \u2013 menerus menyala. Energi yang dihasilkan baru sekitar 50 miliwatt permeter persegi. Ilmuwan memprediksi pada masa depan perangkat biofotovoltaik akan dapat menghasilkan energi sampai dengan 3 watt per meter persegi. Namun energi yang dihasilkan lumut \u2013 lumut dari MOSS Table sudah cukup untuk menghidupkan perangkat yang lebih kecil, misalnya jam digital. Gagasan tentang biofotovoltaik berawal dari kesadaran akan potensi energi yang dihasilkan oleh fotosintesis. Fotosintesis merupakan proses tanaman dan alga mengonversi karbon dioksida yang terdapat dalam atmosfer menjadi senyawa \u2013 senyawa tersebut ke dalam tanah yang mengandung bakteri. Bakteri menguraikan senyawa sekaligus melepaskan zat \u2013 zat lain, termasuk elektron. Elktron inilah yang ditangkap serat konduktif di dalam Moss table dan nantinya akan digunakan untuk menyalakan perangkat elektronik. Dalam keseluruhan proses ini, senyawa kimia diubah menjadi energi listrik dengan materi biologis. Saat ini, ilmuwan masih terus mencari strategi penggunaan biofotofoltaik untuk\u00a0 menghasilkan energi ini menjadi lebih signifikan.
