Google is planning to increase the focus on its own smartphones and other device, rather than partnering with the hardware manufacturers which use its software.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very focused on being successful in consumer electronics,\u201d Rick Osterloh, head of Google\u2019s hardware department, said at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.<\/p>\n
The boundaries between hardware and software are becoming increasingly blurred, which is one reason behind Google\u2019s move. In the past, the company mainly licensed its own software, such as the Android mobile operating system, to hardware manufacturers.<\/p>\n
Now, as well as its own smartphones, Google has created networked speakers, and a notebook computer.<\/p>\n
Google won\u2019t be bound by the sensitivities of other smartphone manufacturers that use Android, according to Osterloh. \u201cWe want to drive innovation for users and we won\u2019t hold back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Google\u2019s pixel smartphone only have small slice of the market, but as the developer of Android \u2013 the most widely used operating system on smartphones \u2013 Google play a major role.<\/p>\n
Underpinning its ambition in the smartphone business, Google recently acquired HTX\u2019s 2,000-person smartphone design division in a 1.1 billion dollar deal. That team will continue to focus on smartphones, Osterloh said\/<\/p>\n
It\u2019s anticipated that Google\u2019s inhouse hardware dibision will benefit from increasing integration with the rest of the company. \u201cI have no restrictions on cooperation with other parts of Google,\u201d Osterloh said.<\/p>\n
That means that engineers working on device development will also work closely with Google\u2019s research department and the Android team, as well as specialists in areas such as mavigation and virtual and augmented reality.<\/p>\n
The connected home is an important focus for Google\u2019s device business. Smart home specialist Nest is now going to be integrated into Osterloh\u2019s hardware division. Bought by the company four years ago, it was previously a separate company under the umbrella of Google\u2019s mother company Alphabet.<\/p>\n
Nest sells networked device for heating, smoke detection, home security systems and alarm systems. A first step in the integration will see the Google Assistant installed on Nest device.<\/p>\n
Some people worry about the privacy and data security implications of networked home device with microphones. Osterloh stressed that Google takes this issue very seriously<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve sold a lot of Google Home speaker. For me that means we\u2019ve built trust with these people, who allow us into their homes,\u201d he said, adding that the company realizes that trust has to be re- earned every day through transparency. (dpa)<\/p>\n
