Namun pada saat Belanda menyerah ke Jepang, kondisi rel di sekitar Gubeng menjadi 1.067 milimeter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MENURUT Pustakawan Sejarah Chrisyandi Tri Kartika, seluruh jalan rel yang dibangun oleh Staatssporwegen (SS) diganti menjadi 1.067 milimeter. Bahkan jalur rel yang dibongkar tidak tanggung-tanggung, mencapai 261 kilometer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jepang ketika itu membutuhkan untuk modal perang sehingga rel kereta api yang terpasang di stasiun Gubeng dan sekitarnya dilepas. Bahkan yang semula double track menjadi single track,&#8221; katanya kepada Radar Surabaya.<\/p>\n<p>Ia menjelaskan, lebih lanjut bahwa sebagian rel kereta api yang dipasang oleh Pemerintah Hindia Belanda dibongkar dikirim ke Myanmar untuk bekal perang dalam membuat persenjataan dari baja. Selain itu, Jepang juga ingin mengacaukan apa yang sudah di bangun Belanda. &#8220;Sehingga apa yang dibutuhkan Jepang saat menguasai Surabaya maka dimanfaatkan,&#8221; terangnya.<\/p>\n<p>Dahulu sebelum Jepang datang dan Belanda menyerah, perbedaan ukuran lebar kereta api yang digunakan dalam dunia perkeretaapian di Indonesia digunakan untuk mempertahan kan eksistensi dan kepentingan bisnis perusahaan kereta api masing-masing. Bahkan yang paling sempit atau ukuran paling kecil untuk lebar rel 600 milimeter. &#8220;Untuk mengoperasikan di jalur sempit maupun pedalaman jauh dari jalur utama,&#8221; ujarnya.<\/p>\n<p>Kehadiran Jepang di Surabaya juga membuat kon disi transportasi kereta api juga terhambat. Sehingga ketika itu kereta api hanya dimanfaatkan untuk keperluan pengangkutan persenjataan dan juga pengungsian. &#8220;Sempat terhenti untuk pengangkutan penumpang.
