On 20 February 2025, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) hosted the History of Physiology Poster Competition 2025 at the Kulliyyah of Medicine, IIUM Kuantan Campus. The event aimed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the historical development of physiology by engaging undergraduate and postgraduate students from across Southeast Asia. Supported by The Paton Historical Studies Fund, the competition highlighted significant contributions from both Islamic and Western traditions, emphasizing how knowledge from the Islamic Golden Age and the evolution of modern integrative physiology continue to shape contemporary medical research and practice.
The competition featured 12 teams from IIUM, Universitas Ciputra (Indonesia), and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), who presented creatively designed posters, 3D models, and video presentations showcasing key figures, discoveries, and paradigm shifts in the history of physiology. Submissions were evaluated through a two-round judging process that assessed content accuracy, creativity, clarity of communication, and overall impact, followed by a five-minute oral presentation and question-and-answer session. This comprehensive evaluation highlighted the students’ depth of research, critical thinking, and ability to effectively communicate the historical significance of physiological science.
