Ciputra University Surabaya Officially Opens Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Surgery Programs
January 23, 2026
Surabaya (beritajatim.com) – Ciputra University (UC) Surabaya officially opened the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) for Obstetrics and Gynecology (Obgyn) and Surgery.
This program was launched to address shortages and the unequal distribution of specialist doctors, particularly in Eastern Indonesia. These two fields are considered strategic because they underpin referral healthcare services.
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) UC Surabaya, Prof. Hendy Hendarto, stated that the Obgyn (Obgyne) PPDS program was designed with the mission of equalising the distribution of medical personnel. According to him, the need for specialist doctors remains high, while their distribution is unequal across regions.
“For Obgyn specialists, our mission is to increase the number of specialist doctors in Eastern Indonesia. The need is still very high, but the distribution is uneven,” Hendy said on Friday (January 23, 2026).
FK UC also provides a scholarship scheme for prospective students from Eastern Indonesia. Scholarships are awarded with specific requirements, including a commitment from graduates to return to their home regions after completing their education.
“The hope is that graduates will not only excel academically but also make a direct impact in regions that still lack specialist doctors,” he said.
In addition to Obgyn, the Surgical PPDS program at FK UC is designed to keep pace with advances in medical technology. Students will be equipped with minimally invasive surgical competencies, which are now standard in modern surgical practice.
“Surgical technology continues to evolve. Doctors need to master minimally invasive techniques for more effective care and faster patient recovery,” said Hendy.
Data from the Ministry of Health indicate that Indonesia continues to lack specialist physicians, particularly outside Java. The national specialist-to-population ratio is considered to fall short of ideal needs, particularly in obstetrics and surgery.
The opening of the PPDS program at UC is also supported by the development of educational facilities, including the construction of a dedicated medical school building. This program is expected to be part of efforts to strengthen the quality and equity of national healthcare services. [ipl/but]
