This assignment is given to practice basic shading skills using one-way hatching and cross hatching techniques. These two techniques will be used as core techniques for 1 semester.

The reference of rocks was chosen to practice these two shading techniques because rocks have a texture complexity that varies according to the direction of the light reflection. Therefore, students are able to determine the needs of each area for shading in this reference photo, whether hatching, cross hatching, or the pencil level pressure, and the accuracy of shading pulls.

After studying the nature of each of the basic shapes and their application to daily objects, through this assignment, they are taught to combine all four in one area, therefore, with the complexity of each object, students will understand scale, detail, and composition, in order to get sense of balance.

This material is the first phase in learning the technique of drawing organic objects which have a complexity of four basic objects framework, when explained using the methods taught. Sensitivity to distance and accuracy is a challenge in this plant material.

In drawing mammals, it takes persistence in shading the fur on the body, and an accurate understanding of the anatomical framework. Although hatching and cross hatching techniques are still used in any assignment, however, only in this mammalian assignment, it is visible that the hatching technique is the core, while cross hatching is the support in some dark fur areas.

Fish is one of those objects that looks complicated, but it’s a lot easier than all the other objects. The most important thing in drawing fish is paying attention to the shape of the scales based on the reference; whether it’s a stack of scales that are clearly visible, or a stack of scales that only appeared the accent colour. This is important be noticed because it will determine the shading technique used. The average for the drawing of the fin is dominated by regular hatching techniques but paying attention to the light and dark values.

The bird object is an integration of all the essence of the Basic Drawing materials. The drawing and shading of the legs, paying attention to the characteristics of the tree branches, the feather parts on the body, shaded with the same technique as mammals, then the feathers on the wings part, have the same level of complexity as fish scales. The perfection achieved in drawing this bird is the success in mastering all the techniques that have been taught in many variations of organic object forms.
